A historic building
Historic England believes the Leslie Arms pub dates to 1900. However, it could be even older, as far as the 1860s. Whatever the case, it is a lovely Victorian building in the arts and crafts style. It’s a significant landmark in Addiscombe, in a prominent location. Additionally, it’s an important piece of Croydon’s history, built by local brewers Nalder & Colyer.
Sadly, the property has not been an operating pub for decades. It was bought in 2000, and has had a very turbulent time since then. It was added to the Heritage at Risk Register in 2009.
There have been dozens of different applications for redevelopment and change of use since 2001. Ultimately, the upper floors became four flats. There were also several applications for change of use of the ground and basement floors, including use for professional or financial services. Could it be a pub ever again?
The Victorian Society has been vocal about protecting the Leslie Arms. They appreciate how much value the building has, especially as a heritage asset. It’s even more valuable considering the wider context and new developments in Croydon.
In 2019 the Victorian Society said the building should return to use as a pub. They argued it would be viable to restore and re-open it because of the quality of the building. This put it at odds with the owner’s vision for the property. As a result, the Victorian Society urged for a change in ownership.
It will now be interesting to see what happens at the auction and beyond. Crucially, the listing focuses on the current use and income from the office space and flats. However, it doesn’t mention the prospect of it returning to use as a pub.
