The Magnificent Seven

Guaranteed rent LambethThere are hundreds of cemeteries, crematoria, and churchyards in London. The Magnificent Seven are some of the most famous. They were built in the 19th century in response to London’s booming population in Victorian England. Suburban locations were chosen, taking inspiration from Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Today most are still active for burials, but they are also key green spaces too.

West Norwood is one of the most impressive of the Magnificent Seven. It is the second oldest, dating back to 1837. It’s home to one of the finest collections of cemetery buildings, structures, mausoleums and monuments in London, including dozens with Grade II or II* listings. As a result, it is a major site of historical, architectural, and ecological interest.

Sadly, Historic England added West Norwood Cemetery to the Heritage at Risk Register because there were serious concerns about its future. Luckily, the story has a happy ending. Speak to us about investments and guaranteed rent in Lambeth.

A six year project

Lambeth Council and the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery are celebrating the results of a six year, £7.2m restoration programme. The works secure the cemetery for the long term. Crucially, there has been work to conserve dozens of monuments, restore St Stephen’s Chapel, and create new space for community use. In addition, there have been upgrades for roads, drainage, and paths. A new maintenance and management plan will help preserve the landscape too.

Critically, all of this work means Historic England has been able to remove West Norwood Cemetery from the Heritage at Risk Register. It’s excellent news for all stakeholders, including local people who love the green space.

Speaking about the upgrades and removal from the at risk register, Deputy Council Leader Natalie Kane said it’s “a testament to the hard work” of the council and community. The restoration also returns the “valued space to its former glory”.
