The housing crisis in London means councils need to consider different ways to improve the supply of homes. Some have really interesting ideas, including redeveloping older buildings and freeing up more land. We want to have a closer look at plans from one borough. Then, if you need services like guaranteed rent in Tower Hamlets and more, you can rely on us.
Canary Wharf redevelopment
Most people know Canary Wharf as one of the main business hubs in London. It’s a thriving area, home to major global companies in various industries, tech start ups, retail and leisure businesses. Incredibly, around 120,000 people visit every day for work.
Interestingly though, over 20,000 people live in the Canary Wharf electoral ward. There is a lot to love here, including fantastic transport links, modern homes, great amenities, and blue and green space. It’s also an area with an outstanding reputation for safety.
Notably, Canary Wharf could become home to hundreds more people in the near future. Tower Hamlets Council has taken a lease on four former office buildings. They are planning an innovative project to turn them into 180 homes (167 two bed and 13 three bed). This will provide more homes for local people facing homelessness, allowing them to remain in the borough close to key things like family, friends, and schools. Speak to us about investments and guaranteed rent in Tower Hamlets.
This is a really interesting project because it will transform the old office buildings and give them a new lease of life. Even better, it will allow Tower Hamlets Council to give locals more stable homes instead of the disruption of living in temporary accommodation. Additionally, it will allow them to reduce their expenditure on paid nightly accommodation like hotel rooms.
Stepney Green
Tower Hamlets Council is also working on proposals to create new homes and a community centre in Stepney Green. The idea is to develop open space at Cressy Place, close to Stepney Green Park and the local station.
This project is only in its infancy, but the Council revealed a plan of the land they are planning to appropriate in September. They aim to use powers from the Local Government Act 1972. Feedback was also welcomed until 22nd October. It will be interesting to see what happens here, but the chance of new housing and a community centre is fantastic.
