Upgrades could be coming for Tooting Broadway

Work is underway to make the London Underground more accessible. Currently, around a third of stations are step-free so anyone can use them. The Mayor of London is planning to increase this to 50% by 2030. As a result, there are plans for various stations. This could make it better for travellers across the city. We want to have a closer look at some of the plans today, then if you want help with guaranteed rent in Wandsworth, you can speak to us.

Design work

Several stations have projects already in the pipeline, currently working on step-free designs. Notable ones include Alperton and Arnos Grove on the Piccadilly Line, and Eastcote on the Piccadilly and Metropolitan Lines.

In addition, three other stations are working on plans. Northolt and North Acton on the Central Line are the first two. Then we have West Hampstead on the Jubilee Line, a major intersection.

Feasibility studies

Guaranteed rent WandsworthBefore actual design work begins, often there is a study to decide if it would be feasible to upgrade the stations. There are several of these taking place for stations across the city.

Tooting Broadway is a notable station that is looking at the feasibility of making it step free. This is a vital spot in South London on the Northern Line. In fact, Counsellor Jenny Yates, the Cabinet Member for Transport in Wandsworth said more than 11 million passengers go through the station each year. There are typically 40 trains every hour. So, upgrading the station would improve accessibility.

Cllr Yates also said upgrading Tooting Broadway would increase access to St George’s Hospital. It is one of the biggest teaching hospitals in the UK, and serves over 3.5 million patients. Step-free access would make it easier for people to go to appointments, visit patients, and go to work. This could even encourage more investment in the area, and we’d be happy to arrange guaranteed rent in Wandsworth for clients.

There are also feasibility studies taking place for Colliers Wood and East Finchley (Northern Line), Croxley and Northwood (Metropolitan), Neasden (Jubilee), and Turnham Green (District and Piccadilly).

Each study considers a number of crucial factors. Most importantly, is a look at the benefits. If there is a clear case the upgrades will be beneficial, it is more likely to progress to the design stage. There is also a look at the impact on passengers, particularly when stations are already busy. Finally, the studies look at the costs. This is important when it comes to exploring funding.

Support for improvements

There is plenty of support for improving accessibility on the Underground. Seb Dance, the Deputy Mayor for Transport, spoke about the Mayor’s office having a commitment to improving the transport network. He said the city is for everyone and should be accessible. He will continue to work with TfL to increase step-free access and make stations better and fairer.
