New bridge for River Lea

When most people think about rivers in London, they instantly picture the Thames. However, there are dozens more. Some are still crucial today for boat traffic. Others are entirely hidden underground. The River Lea is one of the most interesting, with a long history of trade and industry along its banks. It is in the spotlight too because of plans to build a new bridge across it. We want to look at this today, then if you need guaranteed rent in Tower Hamlets, you can speak to us.

The project

A joint venture between Tower Hamlets Council and Newham Council plans to create the new bridge at Ailsa Wharf. It will connect Lochnager Street with Cody Dock and the industrial estate on the other bank.

The bridge will be 63m long. It will be fully accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. As a result, it will offer some fantastic benefits. For example, it will massively improve access to local transport hubs and community facilities. In addition, people will be easily able to access the riverside walk that leads all the way to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Next steps

Guaranteed rent Tower HamletsInterestingly, the project has been in the works now for a few years. There have been public consultations on the plans to get input from locals. Fantastically, there were no objections to the plans.

The latest news for the plan is that Tower Hamlets Council has given approval. Their strategic development committee said it would be an “invaluable transport link”. This is an area that is undergoing substantial regeneration, including new residential development. So, it will help unlock the work. It could also inspire further investment, and we’d be happy to arrange guaranteed rent in Tower Hamlets if people need it.

There was one concern about the project though. The design features hydraulic lifts so that large boats on the river can pass by. However, Tower Hamlets Council said their highways department has no funding for the maintenance and repair of this equipment. The expectation is Newham Council will cover it in their highways network. Plus, there is a belief that external funding will be available.

The next step in the project is for Newham Council to consider it and make a decision. Just like Tower Hamlets, their planning/development committee will have to decide whether to give permission. If yes, the work can then proceed.

In giving approval though, Tower Hamlets Council said the work to build the bridge must begin within three years. So, Newham Council will need to decide in that time to ensure things can start moving.
