In the last few days Islington Council gave confirmation they will be introducing a new ‘Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood’ next year. We want to have a closer look at the plans today and what they mean for a popular part of the borough. Then, if you want to arrange guaranteed rent in Islington, including in the areas affected, you can rely on us.
The scheme
Islington’s Council has been doing a lot of work to make neighbourhoods greener and healthier. This includes changes to ensure streets are safer for locals, including children. They also hope the work will support local businesses and make communities stronger.
The Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood is an important piece of the puzzle. The plan was originally from 2020, securing funding at the time, but was delayed because of covid. In the meantime there have been two rounds of engagement. Now, designs for the scheme are finalised. So, work will take place over the next 12-18 months.
There will be some significant changes to Mildmay’s streets. They could have a big impact, including on investors. Luckily, we can arrange guaranteed rent in Islington for any clients.
Firstly, King Henry’s Walk will no longer be accessible for through traffic; only Blue Badge vehicles will be exempt. Work here will widen streets and plant more trees, making the road better for locals.
There will be a new physical barrier to ensure no access to Queen Margaret’s Grove and St Jude Street. Boleyn Road will have a one way filter so traffic can no longer travel south.
In addition, there will be the introduction of school streets in three key areas; Mildmay Road, Wolsey Road, and Auriga Mews. The idea is they will make it safer for children attending Newington Green Primary School. Notably, there will be traffic restrictions for drop off and pick up times.
Finally, there will be improvements to encourage walking and cycling in Newington Green and the Mayville Estate. This will include work to improve the public space.
Response
Schemes like Liveable Neighbourhoods and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods always divide opinion. That is the case here too. Islington Council said there was plenty of support for their proposals during the consultations. In fact, 51% of responders were strongly for it to improve safety for walking and cycling. However, 23% were strongly against the scheme.
Locals will start to see changes in Mildmay from this autumn. As we said above, the plan is for a 12-18 month construction period. In 2025 there will be trials of the traffic filters. The Council has said they will update residents if there will be works in their areas. They also said they will do all they can to minimise disruption.
