The programme of works can begin now because Croydon Council has been successful in obtaining funds. They applied for a package of £2.6m funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. UKSPF is part of the Government’s levelling up program. It is providing £2.6bn to improve pride of place and give locals more life chances. Ultimately, it wants to improve communities.
A total of £833,000 from the £2.6m package will allow the improvements in the five districts of Croydon. The remaining funds will go to other projects, most notably the establishment of a Young Entrepreneurs Academy so the next generation have more opportunities.
The Executive Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry, said the Council were “delighted that these projects are getting underway”. He also gave thanks to the Council’s partners and communities in the areas for their help to shape the plans.
Projects
The programme will provide funding for projects in New Addington, Purley, Selsdon, Thornton Heath, and the London Road area of West Croydon. The works will improve the public realm in these districts. The goal is to attract people to the areas, therefore supporting local businesses and boosting jobs. The project for New Addington will enhance the area to allow more community events to take place. It will involve refurbishment of the stage and boundary walls in the market square. The project for Thornton Heath could be really special because it will establish a new learning garden for local school children. They will be able to learn crucial things like growing food, gardening, and micro-habitats. Children at Whitehorse Manor on Brigstock Road were asked what they wanted to see from the garden.
Finally, the work at London Road, West Croydon will allow more community events to take place and establishes a new market. London Road Traders Association is working to organise a night and weekend market for Harris Invictus Academy’s forecourt.
