Caring for the environment is one of the most crucial topics at the moment. It is changing our approach to almost every facet of life, including how we live, what we buy, and how we travel. An important thing is to maximise household recycling. It can save resources and reduce things like greenhouse gas emissions. We want to have a closer look today, exploring new data about recycling rates across England. Then, if you need guaranteed rent in Tower Hamlets, we can help you.
The latest figures
In February we got the latest household recycling data from Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) for 2022/2023. There is some good and bad news for different areas. However, it is important to keep in mind that there are various factors at play; some locations will have challenges because of things like population density.
According to Defra, the rate for recycling waste from households in England was 43.3% for the year. Sadly, that is a dip of 0.8% from 21/21. Here the rate was 44.1%.
Some areas are massively outperforming the rate for recycling in England though. The best performer in 22/23 was South Oxfordshire at 61.6%. Three Rivers District Council was marginally behind in second with 61.5%. The top three was rounded out by Vale of White Horse with 60.9%. Overall, 67 authorities had rates over 50%.
At the other end, the lowest rate of any local area was Tower Hamlets in London. The data shows the household recycling during the period was just 17.7%. Liverpool City Council was second with 17.9%. The final area in the bottom three here was Barrow-in-Furness Borough Council with 18%.
Why is Tower Hamlets struggling?
We have a lot of experience working in the area while offering guaranteed rent in Tower Hamlets. As a result, we can share some details on why recycling is harder here than in other areas.
One factor at play is the population density. Tower Hamlets has the fastest growing population in England and is the most densely populated location. So, there are more people and it is harder to put infrastructure in place for recycling.
Another important thing to note is the type of housing in the area. A massive 88% of the stock in Tower Hamlets is flats and maisonettes. It is harder for people to recycle when they live in these kinds of properties. They may lack space for storing waste prior to recycling. Plus, they may have to share things like recycling bins with others. It can make people less likely to recycle.
The huge stock of flats and maisonettes has another impact on household recycling rates. Many areas score higher because people recycle a lot of green waste like lawn trimmings. However, a huge number of properties in Tower Hamlets don’t have gardens or share them. So, the recycling rate will naturally be much smaller.
Tower Hamlets Council is aware of the problem and has a five year plan to create a greener, more sustainable future for the area. They want to improve the infrastructure, service delivery, and engagement with local residents. The hope is it will get more people recycling.
