The Government was talking about the success of their bid to move jobs from the capital. The initial phase had a goal to move 15,000 roles by 2025. However, to date there has been 16,061 moves, smashing the target.

With this early success, they now want to accelerate the next stage of the movement. So, the plan is to move 22,000 more jobs by 2027. Originally the deadline was 2030, but they think they can do it much sooner.

Key moves

As a result, it could allow regeneration work of government buildings in the area. This could lead to opportunities for investment, housing, guaranteed rent in Westminster, and more.

Firstly, the Department of Business and Trade will open a second headquarters in Darlington. This will be on the Economic Campus. Darlington became the home of Treasury North in 2021, so opening a new HQ for the DBT will strengthen the area’s role in a key part of government.

Secondly, the Department for Science Innovation and Technology will open a second HQ in Greater Manchester. This new headquarters will be at the Trinity Bridge House in Salford. The area is already home to a number of civil service jobs, including roles for DSIT and Building Digital UK.

Thirdly, there will be a second headquarters for the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero opening in Scotland. Aberdeen has been chosen as the city to host the HQ. It will put crucial government jobs closer to major players in the oil, gas, and offshore wind industries. A location in the city has not been chosen yet.

Finally, there will be jobs for Wales too. The Department for Work and Pensions is planning to recruit for 270 new roles. In addition, the Ministry of Justice is planning 50 roles for the city. This will add to the 30,000+ civil service jobs already in Wales.

Growth for areas

The moves will benefit each of these local areas. In fact, the Government estimates that there is £30m of benefits for the relocation of every 1,000 jobs. This comes because it increases footfall and spending from staff in the new areas. It can also lead to more local businesses as they support the jobs.

These moves also support the Government’s Levelling Up scheme. It brings more government roles north, rather than having them in London.
