Lambeth Council has agreed to extend a new licensing scheme to enhance housing standards all over the borough. This new scheme will roll out across most of the borough. Councillors gave the green light for the extension of the “selective licensing scheme”. The goal is to handle rogue landlords. Also, it aims to increase conditions for those residing in private rental accommodation.

The roll out means this scheme shall cover 23 of the borough’s 25 electoral wards. However, everything is subject to approval from the Secretary of State for the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government.

Several comments were made from the cabinet on this development. Councillor Mahamed Hashi, Cabinet Member for Safer Communities gave his thoughts. Responses during a 12 week consultation on the proposals show there is local support for the licensing. Nearly two-thirds of businesses and residents gave approval for the proposals for introducing licensing in the initial four wards. It was the same for the 19 earmarked in the second phase.

A report that was presented to the cabinet stated that the scheme was in line with the council’s Borough Plan commitment too.
