Sadiq Khan has made a pledge to establish a new London Bus Company. It would bring the capital’s routes back to public ownership. This is something that’s not happened in three decades. We want to take a closer look at this today, as well as news about other transport services across the city. Then, if you need help with guaranteed rent in Hounslow or other parts of the capital, you can rely on us.
Bus services
The bold plan could see most of London’s 675 bus routes gradually taken from the hands of private establishments. The mayor said this is a next-generation transport programme. If re-elected, he will work alongside a future Labour government to establish it.
At present, the bus network is run by 16 private bus companies. Under Sadiq’s new policy though, after contracts on routes come to an end, they would undergo review. It would dictate whether they would then be taken under the new public operator.
The mayor said this plan would provide superior value for money, consistency, and service to every Londoner and visitor. At the same time, it’d offer certainty and stability if operators were to fail during their current contracts.
The announcement of the plan came following another made by shadow Transport Secretary Louise Haigh. She said a future Labour administration would eradicate the Tory ban on publicly owned bus establishments. Right now, the Bus Services Act 2017 places obstacles in the way of making it a reality. Other next-generation endeavours
If re-elected, Khan has also pledged to make the ‘overwhelming case’ for other next-generation projects. This includes:
- The West London Orbital – an 11-mile extension to the London Overground network that runs from Hounslow to West Hampstead and Hendon
- The extension of the DLR to Thamesmead
- An extension of the Bakerloo Line from Elephant & Castle to Lewisham, as well as a second phase extending to Hayes and Beckenham junction
- Crossrail 2 running from Hertfordshire to Surrey and linking South and North London
Earlier in April, the mayor also spoke of plans for a Superloop-style ‘Bakerloop’ express bus route. This is one that will feature the brown Bakerloo Line livery. Moreover, it will track the route of the proposed Bakerloo line extension while work on it moves forward.
Partnering with a new Central Government
According to Khan, the Tory government has been holding all these projects back. They have not been willing to supply the capital funding.
He said that providing the next generation of major transport projects will call for a partnership with the Central Government. If he wins re-election and Labour is victorious in the General Election, he would be ready to work with the new Government to review bringing back London’s bus routes to public ownership.
