A great design

Old Paddington Cemetery dates back to 1855. At the time the burial board purchased 24 acres of land. Thomas Little designed the horse shoe layout. It has a Grade II listing today, as do two Gothic chapels and a memorial by Sigismund Goetze for his parents.

Interestingly, the original cemetery was in a rural setting. However, with the development of London it is now in a busy area, not far from Kilburn High Road. The urban location is one of the reasons it is such a popular piece of green space.

A number of notable people are buried in Old Paddington Cemetery. One is Michael Bond, the author of the Paddington Bear books. He lived nearby for many years.

New rules under consideration

One thing to note though is the council is considering new rules for dog owners. This comes after concerns about the behaviour of some dogs and their owners. Currently there is a public spaces protection order (PSPO) in place. It dictates that dogs always be under control at all times. Crucially, they must be within eyesight and respond to calls. In addition, waste must be picked up and put in the bins.

Sadly, there have been reports of people failing to comply with the PSPO. Most alarmingly there have been complaints about dog attacks and waste on graves. In response, the council is considering tighter rules. They could mean that dogs have to be on a lead at all times or impose conditions for letting them off.

There is currently a public consultation for the PSPO, open until 10th December. The council is encouraging locals to give feedback on what they would like to see.
