A former Walworth eyesore is set to become something new

New plans to redevelop a South London ‘eyesore’ have been approved. The property in question is an office block that has been empty for over 12 years. It will now get a bright new future. Let’s explore the plans, then you can speak to us if you want guaranteed rent in Southwark.

Guaranteed rent SouthwarkFormer council offices at Chatelain House in Walworth are going to become hundreds of student flats. Also, there will be 23 social rent houses and a new community kitchen under these proposals.

The redevelopment is going to see the 1980s Walworth Road block partially demolished. There will then be remodelling as a pair of six and seven-storey buildings. A Southwark Council planning committee chose to wave the scheme through.

A representative from the applicant, property firm Fabrix, made a statement at the meeting. They said the team was proposing to dramatically remodel the structure. This is to change what’s presently an eyesore into a positive contributor for the high street. It will be one that centres on nature and community. Pivotal to this is the giving over of nearly the whole ground floor to public and community facing users.

Community value

The expectation is for local charity Pembroke House to operate the community centre as well as the kitchen. This will be on the ground floor of the redeveloped structure. Speak to us if you need the top services for guaranteed rent in Southwark.

The fresh high street community space will utilise the power of food to bring together the locale’s current communities and the development’s new residents. It will use the preparation of food and coming together to eat to fight against social isolation. Also, it will connect old and young, and offer access to fairer priced, healthier food.

Past plans to develop Chatelain House got approval from the council in 2015. They were never built though. They’d have seen a complete demolition of the building, replacing it with a six-storey structure. There wouldn’t be a community centre. Housing would also be less affordable if you compare to the new proposals.

Comments from councillors

A local Labour councillor, Darren Merill, said that Chatelain House had been a blight on this area for more than a decade. He said the new plans were a massive improvement on the 2015 application.

A local resident that spoke at the meeting said they were also supportive of the new development. This is because they believe it’d bring more people to Walworth Road and enhance the area’s look.

A planning committee of mostly Labour councillors and one from the Liberal Democrats unanimously voted to approve the plans.
