Croydon Council recently announced new plans to regenerate part of Old Town. The project will seek to improve the public realm and parks around Minster Green. Funding

The Council is planning to invest £7.5m to improve the area. This funding will be part of the £12.2m Growth Zone budget. The plan was developed with the Greater London Authority and TfL. It involves retaining business rates and will provide funds for local projects until 2034.

The actual plan for the area is interesting. It will involve a relocation of parking and removal of a pedestrian subway. Then there will be the creation of a new play area and green space. Plus there will be new lighting around the Minster. Overall the layout of the district will improve, creating somewhere residents and visitors can enjoy.

The redevelopment will also seek to tackle a number of crucial issues for the area. A lot of locals report problems with anti social behaviour, rubbish, and vandalism here. Celebrating the history

A lot of people want to see the Council do more to preserve Old Town. This is part of Croydon with a huge amount of history. There are buildings here dating back to the 14th century. Locals who know about it feel it would be a great thing for visitors to experience.

Croydon Minster is one of the most prominent buildings in the area. The church is Grade I Listed. It still has a number of important monuments from the medieval building. The church is also the resting place of several Archbishops of Canterbury.

The area has other religious links and historic properties too. Croydon Palace, another property with a Grade I listing, was a residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury for hundreds of years. Some of the buildings are a girls’ school today. Tours are available during the holidays.

The regeneration

Croydon Council is yet to reveal designs for their plans and how they will impact the area. They expect to finalise and release them later this year. Then the goal is to begin construction afterwards.
