They were designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the celebrated architect behind the New Bodleian Library and Battersea Power Station. Over the years they became a common sight all over Britain and in various other parts of the world, including Commonwealth Countries.

You can find arguably the most famous red phone box in Parliament Square. It is a popular tourist spot because it is so close to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. In fact, there is often a queue of people waiting to pose for pictures with it and the landmarks in the background.

Amazingly, at the height of their usage in the 90s, there were over 100,000 red telephone boxes in the UK. Sadly, their numbers declined since then. There are still a number of them across the UK today though. Some are still working telephones, whereas others have been adapted or repurposed.

Earlier this year we got the reveal of the results of a project to give new life to the 100 year old red phone box on Upper Street. It was in a sorry state, leaning over and regularly suffering vandalism. However, a collaboration between Dominic McKenzie Architects and the nearby William Tyndale Primary School transformed it. Now it’s a lovely library and asset for the community, full of books for children with a few titles for adults appearing occasionally too. It looks amazing at night, lighting up the street.

Enfield

Anybody who wants to become the owner of a red phone box should keep an eye out for an auction at Strettons in September. The first lot is a Grade II listed phone box in Winchmore Hill. The second lot is for four boxes in Little Park Gardens in Enfield town centre, also Grade II. There has been a lot of interest in both lots according to the auctioneers. The potential is there to adapt them for other use, so they could have an interesting future like the box in Islington.
