According to figures, Labour has plans to erect thousands of homes in Barnet. This is part of an effort to create 1.5 million new homes in England by 2029. It will be great news for investors and locals. We’ll be happy to help too, with guaranteed rent in Barnet and more.
An urban policy think tank welcomed the revised housing objectives. Although, it also gave a warning that the government could fall short of its target, particularly in urban centres.
New targets
The Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government released the new annual housebuilding targets in December. This was in response to the National Planning Policy Framework consultation. They reveal the aim to build 370,000 new homes annually over the country. This is an increase from a past aim of 305,000.
Within Barnet, indicative figures suggest the new housebuilding target is 4,057 homes yearly. Across London, Labour wants to erect 87,992 every year.
The government also said they will provide £100m of extra money for councils to deliver housing. Additionally, there will be 300 more planning officers to accelerate the planning decision-making process. If you’re after the greatest services for guaranteed rent in Barnet, give us a call.
Review of greenbelt boundaries
What’s more, councils will receive orders to review their greenbelt boundaries. This is so they can meet targets by pinpointing lower quality “grey belt” land they can build on. According to the NPPF, for the first time, grey belt is land that “doesn’t strongly contribute to green belt purposes”. One of these purposes is restricting urban sprawl. Another would be preventing neighbouring towns merging. Finally, is maintaining the special character of historic towns.
The chief executive of Centre of Cities welcomed these amended housing targets. Yet, he warned the Government would likely miss its 2029 objective. This is particularly in urban settings. Without much bolder planning reform, he believes this to be the case.
The chief added that the discretionary element of the planning system has undercut the provision of new homes. Moreover, he said green belt regulations curtail growth in urban spots. Only by disposing of the discretionary phase of planning, and replacing this system with a flexible zoning system, can they remove major obstacles to housebuilding. Then they will be able to reach the new targets everywhere.
Prime Minister’s comments
The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, said that supplying homes to people and families has to be “top priority” for the planning system. That should be great news to everyone. As a top provider of guaranteed rent in Barnet and other parts of London, we certainly appreciate it.
He was asked if he would handle the issue of environmental and habitat regulations preventing developers from building. His response was that we have been struggling to build enough homes for years. So, people and families lack the security they desire. He said they’re determined to break through that to do what’s necessary. They do want to get the balance right though. But if there are people who need homes for themselves and their families, that needs to be their priority.
Housing Minister comments
Matthew Pennycook also spoke about housebuilding. He said that the government hasn’t shied away from controversial choices. What’s more, he encourages local authorities to embrace the challenge of greater development targets. The minster recognises they are asking a lot from local authorities. However, they will support council leaders trying to supply homes in good faith.
Pennycook is confident the revised framework they are bringing in will support far higher rates of housebuilding and economic expansion. Local authorities have to embrace the challenge of higher targets and make pushes for better and more development in their areas.
