In the middle of July we got the news about which parks and green spaces had won and retained their Green Flags. Amazingly, Hillingdon was successful in retaining all 67 in the borough. As a result, it remains the best location nationally for the quality of its parks. It has now won this honour for an impressive 12 years in a row.

The massive thing here is it celebrates how great the parks and green spaces are in the area. To retain an award, a panel of judges from environmental charities look at things like the quality of facilities, cleanliness, and environmental friendliness, as well as how much value they bring to the community.

It is also fantastic that Hillingdon has retained its Green Flags when you consider the work that goes into maintaining them. The council has an investment programme to enhance parks and green space to celebrate the diamond jubilee (60 years) of the borough in 2025. They will be spending £1m on renovations and more.

Some parks have already had some renovation work. For example, Barra Hall Park in Hayes now has a renovated bandstand for the community to enjoy. Work is in the pipeline to improve landscaping, seating, signage, and paths at Bessingby Park in Ruislip. Other improvements in different areas will be revealed in the future.

Council response

The council was incredibly happy to retain the Green Flag Awards. Cllr Eddie Lavery said the local authority is “committed to creating a green future for residents and nature” and that they will also continue to ensure “prioritisation of our parks as key assets for all”.
