The recent landslide victory for Labour in the General Election means there are some big changes ahead for the UK. One thing we could see is the creation of a Holocaust memorial close to Parliament in London. This plan has been in the works for years, but has had a number of stumbling blocks. Original proposals

The Government has been looking at creating a memorial and learning centre since 2015. However, there was an issue with the plans right away. The site chosen for the development is Victoria Tower Gardens, just to the south of the Parliament buildings. It is a great location in the heart of the area. But, there is a law from 1900 that says the land is only for use as a public park. It also has a Grade II listing.

Interestingly, the plans did get planning permission in 2021. There was a public enquiry and the planning inspector gave a recommendation that they get a green light.

This wasn’t the end of the battle though. The case had to go to the High Court because of a challenge by London Historic Parks and Gardens Trust. They said the 1900 law and Grade II listing should be respected.

Plans were still on the table earlier this year, with the Conservative Government supporting the Holocaust Memorial Bill. The legislation would remove the legal obstacles and authorise expenditure for the memorial’s creation and maintenance. However, the General Election came before the Bill’s approval.

Labour’s decision

With Labour now in control of the Government, they have given affirmation that they’ll reintroduce the Bill. They want to ensure that future generations remember the horrors that can occur because of intolerance and persecution. They hope the memorial will be a signal for unity and creating a better future together.

The Holocaust Memorial Bill will now go through the House of Commons. There won’t be a debate on it because one already took place during the previous Parliament. As a result, it will go to the House of Lords.

It will be interesting to see if the proposal is ultimately successful. There is cross-party support for the plans, but there is some opposition. For example, there is criticism of the design. In addition, there are concerns the site is too small.
