History

The very first mention of Kenton dates back to 1231. However, it was already a popular farming settlement at this time.

The area was still an agricultural spot towards the end of the 19th century. It only had the basic amenities you would expect from these villages.

Interestingly, Kenton bucked the trend for Outer London at the time. It was common to see manors and gentlemen’s seats pop up around this part of the city. However, there weren’t any here, probably due to the lack of accessibility.

The railway

Guaranteed rent BrentLike so many parts of London, there area saw big changes because of the railway. In fact, its extension meant a move for the town centre. It was originally on the north tip of Woodcock Park. However, the railway station would open to the west toward Wealdstone. So, the centre moved too.

Kenton is a classic example of Metro-land. It was one of the suburban areas that saw growth because the Metropolitan Railway company retained land along the routes. In the 20th century they decided to develop plots to create housing in countryside settings with fast rail connections to Central London.

There were original plans to develop part of this area before WWI. However, the conflict delayed them. The company had another look in 1919 in anticipation of a housing boom after the war. But, the real growth didn’t come until 1925. The popularity of Harrow and Wembley lead to this.

The development would peak in 1931. At this point the area was vastly different, home to several new estates of homes and lots of amenities.

South Kenton

The area of South Kenton is most notable when you consider Brent. It is the part of the district that is in that borough rather than Harrow. The plans for it date to 1927. It would see the creation of a new station and more amenities. The railway link opened in 1933, with new housing completing afterwards.

Today it is one of the most popular locations in the area. It has some fantastic housing, a park, school, shops, and other amenities. The station has Tube services on the Bakerloo Line as well as Overground commuter trains.
